Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the same approach in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really free's up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, along with several trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
