Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's initial two years were rough as he played many hours and don't win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. He had access into a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
