Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold'em, in which the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really free's up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there's no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo provides an exciting range of betting choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
