Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play countless hours and don't win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
