Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often play against each other. Howard had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
