Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi low starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold'em, where the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there's no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low offers an amazing collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with a few trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it's worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
