Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It's a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, where the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it's not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
