Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold 'Em, where the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free's up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming array of betting choices and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
