Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and moved to New York to play some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's first two years were rough as he played countless hours and don't win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently wager against one another. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision.
